About this treatment
A varicocele is a set of enlarged veins around the testicle. It can cause a dull ache or heaviness, a shrinking testicle, or poor semen quality when a couple is trying to conceive. The usual advice is a surgical varicocelectomy through an incision in the groin or scrotum.
Varicocele embolization closes the faulty vein from the inside instead. An interventional radiologist passes a thin catheter through a puncture in a neck or groin vein under imaging guidance and seals the vein with tiny coils or a sclerosant. There is no incision and no stitches, and it is done under local anaesthetic.
