About Varicose Veins
Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) and VenaSeal medical adhesive (glue closure) are the modern, walk-in walk-out varicose vein treatments for great and small saphenous vein reflux. At Clinic Seven in Hyderabad, duplex ultrasound first maps the leaking veins, then a thin laser fibre or catheter is placed inside the diseased vein through a tiny needle puncture under local tumescent anaesthesia. Laser energy or medical adhesive seals the vein along its length, and the leg re-routes blood through the healthy deep veins.
This avoids the classical vein-stripping surgery, relieves aching, heavy legs and cosmetic bulges, and stabilises skin damage from long-standing venous insufficiency. Published closure rates from the ClosureFast and VenaSeal trials exceed 95% at 3 years, and outcomes are backed by NHS, Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic vein care guidance.
- Closure rate of 95-98% at 3 years in published clinical trials.
- No leg incisions, no vein stripping and no general anaesthesia.
- Walk-in walk-out procedure with return to work in 24-48 hours.
- VenaSeal glue closure avoids compression stockings for many patients.
Personalized scenarios are presented during consultation. Individual results may vary.
Symptoms of Varicose Veins & Venous Insufficiency
Varicose veins are a sign of underlying vein reflux that tends to worsen over the years. Treatment is advised when you notice:
- Aching, heavy or tired legs, worse by evening
- Visible bulging, ropy or twisted veins
- Swelling around the ankles
- Night cramps or restless legs
- Itching, eczema or darkening skin near the ankle
- Burning or throbbing over a vein
- A healed or open venous ulcer
- Bleeding from a prominent vein
If these symptoms sound familiar, book an evaluation with Dr. Nagateja Bonala at Clinic Seven, Hyderabad.
- •Deep vein thrombosis or blocked deep veins, which need treatment first
- •Purely spider veins with no reflux, where cosmetic sclerotherapy suits better
- •Pregnancy, where treatment is usually deferred
- •Severe peripheral arterial disease in the same leg
How the Varicose Veins procedure works
Every step is planned and performed under image guidance by an Interventional Radiologist at Clinic Seven, Hyderabad.
- 01
Ultrasound Mapping
Duplex ultrasound identifies the diseased veins and reflux pattern.
- 02
Access
A tiny puncture allows a thin fibre or catheter into the target vein.
- 03
Closure
Laser energy or medical adhesive seals the vein along its length.
- 04
Re-Routing
Blood is redirected through healthy deep veins, pain and swelling resolve.
Laser & glue vs traditional vein stripping
| Factor | Varicose Veins | Open vein stripping surgery |
|---|---|---|
| Access | Needle puncture, no cuts | Groin cut and multiple incisions |
| Anaesthesia | Local tumescent, or none for glue | General or spinal |
| Recovery | Walk out the same day | Days to weeks off your feet |
| Back to work | 1–2 days | 1–2 weeks |
| Compression stockings | Short course, or none for glue | Several weeks |
| Recurrence | Very low (95–98% closure) | Higher |
The right choice depends on your scans, symptoms and goals. Your Interventional Radiologist will talk you through both options at your consultation.

Risks and safety
Every procedure carries some risk. These are the ones your Interventional Radiologist will review before Varicose Veins.

What affects the cost

Questions about Varicose Veins
Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) uses heat energy to seal the vein and needs tumescent anaesthesia along the vein. VenaSeal glue closure uses a medical adhesive placed at a few points along the vein without heat, so tumescent injections are usually not needed. Both have similar high closure rates and are performed as walk-in walk-out procedures.
The treated vein is intended to remain closed for good, and around 95-98% of veins stay closed at 3 years. New varicose veins can develop over time in a small number of patients, particularly with a strong family history or standing occupation.
After EVLA a compression stocking is worn for about 7 days. After VenaSeal glue closure many patients do not need stockings at all, which is a practical advantage in a hot and humid climate like Hyderabad.
Local anaesthesia is used at the access point and, for laser, along the vein. Most patients feel pressure and warmth rather than pain during the procedure. Mild pulling or tightness for 5-7 days is normal and settles on its own.
Untreated venous reflux tends to worsen. It can lead to swelling, skin darkening, itching, eczema, bleeding from a burst vein, and non-healing venous leg ulcers over years, per NHS and Cleveland Clinic guidance.
Walking begins the same day, office work is possible within 24-48 hours, and gym workouts and long-distance travel are usually resumed after about 7-10 days.
Symptomatic varicose vein treatment supported by duplex ultrasound is covered by most Indian health insurance plans. Our team helps you check policy inclusions before scheduling.
