How much does prostate surgery cost in Hyderabad?

For an enlarged prostate (BPH), the two operations most hospitals list are TURP, where tissue is cut away through the urine pipe, and laser surgery such as HoLEP. These are the listed prices we found in Hyderabad in October 2026. They come from hospital and portal pages, which have a commercial interest, and the ranges are wide. Even one hospital's own pages gave different figures in different places, which is why an itemised quote matters more than any headline number.

What are TURP, laser surgery and PAE?

These are three different ways to treat the same problem, a prostate that is squeezing the urine pipe.

  • TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate): a thin instrument is passed through the urine pipe and prostate tissue is cut away. It needs spinal or general anaesthesia.
  • Laser surgery (HoLEP and similar): a laser is used through the urine pipe to remove prostate tissue. It also needs anaesthesia and usually a hospital stay.
  • Prostate artery embolization (PAE): nothing is cut or removed. A thin tube is guided through a tiny puncture in the wrist or groin to the small arteries that feed the prostate, and tiny particles reduce the blood flow. The gland gradually shrinks. It is usually done under local anaesthesia.

What is in the bill? Before, during and after

Quotes are easier to compare when you know what they should contain. A fair itemised quote for any prostate procedure covers the same three stages.

  • Before: the consultation, a PSA blood test, an ultrasound or MRI of the prostate, a urine flow test and routine blood tests. For PAE, a scan of the arteries to the prostate is also used to plan the procedure.
  • During: the procedure itself, the doctor's and anaesthetist's fees, the operating theatre or procedure room, the instruments and materials used, and your room.
  • After: your stay (if any), medicines, a catheter if one is needed, and your follow-up visits.

Why do quotes differ so much?

Two patients can be quoted very different amounts for the same operation. These are the usual reasons:

  • The size of the prostate, and how much needs to be treated
  • The technique used (standard, bipolar, laser or robotic)
  • The room you choose: shared, single, deluxe or suite
  • The surgeon's fees, the anaesthetist, and consumables such as stents
  • Tests before the procedure, medicines, and follow-up visits afterwards
  • Whether insurance or a corporate scheme approves the treatment
  • Complications or a longer stay than planned

What does PAE cost at Clinic Seven?

At Clinic Seven, the estimate for prostate artery embolization in a shared room is ₹1,50,000 to ₹1,73,000. These ranges are a guide, not a bill. The final cost depends on your scan and examination, and insurance may reduce what you pay.

Is prostate surgery a day surgery? Hospital stay and recovery

This is where PAE and TURP differ most for patients. In a UK register of 305 men, 71% of PAE procedures were done as day cases or outpatient visits. By contrast, 80% of men having TURP needed at least one night in hospital, and most needed two [2]. The same register found that men's pain levels and their return to normal activities after PAE were very encouraging [2]. At Clinic Seven, most patients are back to normal activity within a few days.

TURP and laser surgery are operations under spinal or general anaesthesia, so you can expect a hospital stay, and most men need a catheter for a short time afterwards. Ask any hospital how long they expect both to last for you.

Cost is not the only difference

Price is one thing. What you go through matters just as much. This is how the treatments compare in the trials:

PAE compared with TURP
TURPPAE
AnaesthesiaSpinal or general [1]Local anaesthesia [1]
Hospital stay8 in 10 needed at least one night, most needed two [2]7 in 10 went home the same day [2]
Adverse events in 12 weeks70 in the trial [1]36 in the trial [1]
Losing ejaculation completely52 in 100 men [3]16 in 100 men [3]
ApproachTissue is cut away through the urine pipeCatheter through the wrist or groin, no cutting

How well does each work?

Both bring real relief, and the figures are close. In the Swiss randomised trial of 103 men, the average symptom score fell by 9.2 points 12 weeks after PAE and by 10.8 points after TURP [1]. In the UK register, the typical improvement a year after PAE was about 10 points, against about 15 points after TURP [2].

TURP improves the urine flow and shrinks the prostate more than PAE does. In the Swiss trial, flow rose by 15 mL per second after TURP and 5 after PAE [1]. In the UK register, 20% of men who had PAE (5% in the first year and 15% after) later had another procedure [2]. That is why PAE is not offered to every man. It suits men who want to avoid anaesthesia and an operation, and we choose carefully.

Which prostate surgery is best for me?

There is no single best operation. The right choice follows your symptoms, prostate size, scans, health and priorities. These are the patterns we see in the studies. They are guides, not rules:

  • TURP and laser surgery give the strongest improvement in urine flow, and suit many men who are fit for an operation.
  • PAE is often discussed for men who want to avoid surgery or general anaesthesia, men who are poor candidates for surgery because of other illnesses, men with a catheter, and men with large prostates. In 152 men with prostates over 100 mL, who would often be offered open surgery, clinical success was 90% at one month and 72.4% out to 5.5 years [4].
  • Tablets and monitoring suit men with milder symptoms.

Will insurance cover it?

Cashless treatment can be arranged with major Indian health insurers and TPAs, and credit treatment is available for CGHS and Singareni beneficiaries. Whether your policy covers the procedure, and how much, is confirmed only after a policy check, so please carry your policy details and TPA card to the first visit. The care team handles the insurance approval and paperwork end to end.

Questions to ask any hospital before you decide

Bring your prostate ultrasound, PSA and urine flow reports, and ask:

  • What exactly does the quote include and exclude?
  • How many of these procedures does the surgeon do a year?
  • How long will I stay, and how long will I have a catheter?
  • What are the chances I will need more treatment later?
  • Are there options for me that do not involve cutting?
