Do fibroids always need treatment?
Fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the muscle of the uterus and are very common [3]. Many cause no symptoms and are found by chance on a scan. These are usually watched, not treated.
Treatment is considered when fibroids cause heavy or long periods, anaemia, pelvic pressure, pain, frequent urination, constipation or problems with fertility [3, 4].
The non-surgical and uterus-preserving options
Options range from medicines to procedures. Your doctor will usually begin with the least invasive one that fits your symptoms.
| Option | How it works | Uterus kept? | UFE |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medicines | Hormonal or other medicines to reduce bleeding or pain | Yes | Symptoms often return after stopping |
| Myomectomy | Surgery removes the fibroids | Yes | Needs an operation and general anaesthesia |
| Hysterectomy | Surgery removes the uterus | No | Definitive, but it is major surgery |
| UFE | Catheter blocks the blood supply to fibroids | Yes | Day-care, no abdominal incision [1, 2] |
How UFE works
An interventional radiologist makes a tiny entry in the wrist or groin and guides a catheter to the arteries feeding the uterus. Calibrated particles are released to block the blood supply to each fibroid. Starved of blood, the fibroids shrink over the following 3-6 months and symptoms ease [1, 2].
At Clinic Seven the procedure is done by Dr. Nagateja Bonala, with relief of symptoms reported in about 85-90% of women.

What recovery looks like
Most women go home the same day. Typical points:
- Cramping pain is common in the first day or two and is managed with medicines.
- Most women return to desk work and routine within about a week.
- Periods usually become lighter over the next cycles as fibroids shrink.
- A follow-up scan or MRI after a few months shows the shrinkage.
Edwards et al., N Engl J Med 2007. Surgery group: 43 hysterectomies and 8 myomectomies.
Who should think twice about UFE
UFE is not suitable for every woman. Discuss these points at consultation:
- You plan to conceive. Myomectomy is often preferred when pregnancy is the main goal [4].
- A fibroid sits mainly inside the uterine cavity, where a hysteroscopic procedure may suit better.
- You are pregnant, or there is an active pelvic infection.
- The scan raises any concern that the growth might not be a simple fibroid, which needs surgical assessment.

Frequently asked questions
- Can fibroids be cured without surgery?
- Fibroids can be effectively treated without surgery. UFE shrinks the fibroids and relieves symptoms in most women [1, 2]. No treatment can promise that new fibroids will never form, so follow-up matters.
- Is UFE painful?
- You are comfortable during the procedure with sedation and local numbing. Cramping in the first day or two is expected and is controlled with medicines.
- Will UFE affect my periods or hormones?
- Periods usually become lighter. UFE does not remove the uterus or ovaries, so hormones continue as before in most women.
- Can I get pregnant after UFE?
- Pregnancies after UFE are reported, but if pregnancy is your main goal, many specialists prefer myomectomy [4]. Please discuss your plans openly at consultation.
- What is the best treatment for fibroids?
- There is no single best treatment. It depends on fibroid size, position, your symptoms and whether you want to keep your uterus or conceive. A consultation with your scan decides.
- Where can I find a fibroid specialist in Hyderabad?
- Dr. Nagateja Bonala is an interventional radiologist who performs UFE at Clinic Seven, Kukatpally. You can book a consultation or a second opinion.
